Litany for the Coming
of the Lord in Glory
One way to help stir this hope in you and in the Church is to actively pray for His Coming. We encourage you to pray, alone or with others, the Litany for the Coming of the Lord in Glory. You can download a copy of the litany and pray along with us following the video(s) below.
An international and ecumenical group of friends connected via Zoom to pray the Litany for the Coming of the Lord in Glory on November 20, 2020.
Why pray this litany? Prayer can have an amazing effect on us. It raises our mind above the cares of this world. It helps us realize we are not alone, but that we have access to our Heavenly Father, our Lord and Savior, and the Holy Spirit to help us experience in part what we will experience in full when Jesus comes in glory. Those who pray can experience intimacy with God, for he is not far away, but dwells within us. In fact, our taking the time to pray is a response to God who dwells within us:
I was made a minister of this church according to the commission from God granted to me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, that is, the mystery which had been hidden from the past ages and generations, but now has been revealed to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what the wealth of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles is, the mystery that is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:25-27)
This prayer offered to Jesus is a direct response to the Holy Spirit within us who is preparing the Church, the Bride of Christ, for his coming.
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires, take the water of life without cost. (Revelation 22:17)
Are you hungering and thirsting for more hope. Turn to Jesus, the author of hope. Praying this litany will also help us prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus. It will stir our own consciences and help us grow in holiness. It will give us God’s perspective on what is going on in the world around us. It will give us confidence to approach the throne of God for his help, his wisdom, his provision. And, it will greatly please our Heavenly Father who delights in seeing his creation grow in longing for the fulfillment of all He has planned. Come Lord Jesus!
The Litany was written by the late Father Peter Hocken (shown above praying the Litany with Mrs. Terri Celmer during one of the weeks of prayer and teaching they offered a group of young adults in Europe).
